On November 3, it was learned from CNOOC that at the recently concluded 2025 Offshore Technology Conference BRASIL (OTC Brazil), CNOOC's "Haiheng" FLAT PRO wide-temperature-range stable-rheology high-performance synthetic-based drilling fluid system (hereinafter referred to as the "Haiheng" deepwater drilling fluid system) was awarded the OTC New Technology Award. This achievement marks a significant breakthrough for China's deepwater drilling fluid technology, transitioning from catching up to keeping pace with global leaders. It further strengthens the technological foundation for the development of oil and gas resources in China's deep-sea exploration areas, offering a new "China Solution" for global deepwater and deep-layer oil and gas development.
During the selection process, CNOOC's "Haiheng" Deepwater Drilling Fluid System stood out by achieving a breakthrough in constant rheological temperature range that pushes the limits of industry standards. This technology maintains stable flow performance of the drilling fluid system across a temperature range from -10°C to 180°C, even under harsh environmental conditions and within narrow operational safety density windows. It thereby lays a solid foundation for the safer and more stable exploration and development of oil and gas reservoirs in complex environments, such as those in ultra-deepwater exceeding 3,000 meters, ultra-deep wells surpassing 10,000 meters, extended-reach drilling, and polar regions.
The OTC Technology Award is renowned as the "Oscar Award" in the international offshore oil and gas technology sector. Following its wins of the OTC Asia New Technology Award in 2024 with the "Haiheng" CO₂ Storage Cementing Technology and the "Xuanyue" Casing Behind Density Logging Technology, CNOOC's specialized subsidiary has once again secured the OTC Brazil New Technology Award, this time with the "Haiheng" Drilling and Completion Fluid Technology. This marks the third consecutive time CNOOC has claimed this top global offshore oil and gas technology award, signifying a milestone transition from "keeping pace" to "running alongside" global leaders in this field. This achievement holds great significance for substantially enhancing its international market competitiveness and brand influence.
The OTC Brazil organizing committee stated: "The 'Haiheng' cementing equipment has already been successfully installed and commissioned in Brazil's deepwater waters. The latest success of the 'Haiheng' Deepwater Drilling Fluid System winning the award makes us even more optimistic about introducing this cutting-edge technology."
As a brand of oilfield chemical technology products independently developed by CNOOC, the "Haiheng" series technologies can establish a stable fluid environment and channel between downhole drilling tools and formations, making it one of the key technologies for implementing offshore oil and gas drilling and completion operations. Currently, the "Haiheng" deepwater drilling and completion fluid technologies have been widely applied in global deepwater and ultra-deepwater drilling operations, with an average operating water depth exceeding 1,500 meters and a maximum operating water depth reaching 2,619 meters, setting a record for operational water depth in the Western Pacific.
Bu Jiyong, the lead of this technology at CNOOC, stated: "The 'Haiheng' technology has overcome the technical challenges of wellbore stability in deep, extended-reach wells. To date, it maintains the 'double' records for the deepest drilling at 9,508 meters and the longest horizontal displacement at 8,689 meters offshore China. It stands as one of CNOOC's key achievements in driving 'research-production-application-innovation' scientific breakthroughs through fundamental discipline development."
This award represents a key scientific and technological achievement resulting from CNOOC's continuous efforts to drive technological iteration and upgrades in the industry's ultra-high temperature, ultra-high pressure, and ultra-deepwater sectors. In recent years, CNOOC's specialized subsidiaries have consistently advanced high-level self-reliance and strength in marine science and technology. They have persisted in strengthening original and pioneering scientific research, maintaining full control over equipment manufacturing, and establishing a comprehensive, multi-dimensional industrial chain layout covering "surface, water column, subsea, and subsurface" key technologies and equipment R&D. The company now achieves 95% coverage in mainstream cementing and drilling & completion fluid technologies, positioning it within the industry's first tier.
The Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) is one of the world's largest and most influential oil and gas exhibitions. Under the theme "The Future of Deepwater Technology: Connecting Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy," this year's event attracted over 5,000 delegates and featured exhibitions from more than 200 top global oil and gas companies, drawing over 25,000 attendees from around the world.
The extraction of oil and natural gas cannot be achieved without desanders.
Shanghai Saga Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd., established in Shanghai in 2016, is a modern technology enterprise integrating R&D, design, production, and service. We are dedicated to developing separation and filtration equipment for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries.
Our high-efficiency product portfolio includes de-oiling/dewatering hydrocyclones, desanders for micron-sized particles, and compact flotation units. We provide complete skid-mounted solutions and also offer third-party equipment retrofitting and after-sales services. Holding multiple proprietary patents and operating under a DNV-GL certified ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-45001 management system, we deliver optimized process solutions, precise product design, strict adherence to engineering specifications, and ongoing operational support.
Our high-efficiency cyclone desanders, renowned for their exceptional 98% separation rate, have earned recognition from international energy leaders. Constructed with advanced wear-resistant ceramics, these units achieve 98% removal of particles as fine as 0.5 microns in gas streams. This capability enables the reinjection of produced gas for miscible flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a key solution for enhancing oil recovery in challenging formations. Alternatively, they can treat produced water, removing 98% of particles larger than 2 microns for direct reinjection, thereby boosting water-flood efficiency while minimizing environmental impact. Proven in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas, and others across Southeast Asia, SAGA desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They provide reliable solids removal from gas, well fluids, and condensate, and are critical for seawater purification, production stream protection, and water injection/flooding programs.
