On December 24, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced the discovery of a new 100-million-ton oilfield in the Neogene shallow layer of the Bohai Sea—the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield. This marks the seventh 100-million-ton oilfield successively discovered in the Bohai oilfield, China's largest crude oil production base, since 2019, further consolidating the country's offshore oil and gas resource reserves.
The Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield is located in the central waters of the Bohai Sea, approximately 44 kilometers west of Jingtang Port. It represents another 100-million-ton lithologic oilfield discovered in the region in recent years, following the major discovery of the Qinhuangdao 27-3 oilfield. The discovery well encountered an oil layer of 66.7 meters and reached a total depth of 1,688 meters. Tests indicate that the oilfield can produce approximately 370 tons of crude oil per day per well, demonstrating promising exploration potential.
It is understood that the newly discovered Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield is situated on the slope belt at the edge of the Shijiutuo Uplift. The Shijiutuo Uplift was one of the primary exploration targets in the early stages of Bohai Oilfield development. If the Shijiutuo Uplift is likened to a mountain, the Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield would be located at its foothills. According to conventional exploration theory, the slope belt of an uplift is a necessary pathway for oil and gas migration from source rock areas to higher accumulation zones. However, due to the absence of large-scale fault seals, hydrocarbons tend to "pass through without accumulating," making it difficult to form large-scale hydrocarbon accumulations. Since the 1970s, multiple rounds of exploration targeting various layers in the slope belt of the Shijiutuo Uplift have yielded unsatisfactory results.
In 2024, the discovery of the billion-ton lithologic oilfield Qinhuangdao 27-3 in the Shijiutuo Uplift provided valuable experience and insights for lithological exploration concepts in the region. By integrating extensive existing drilling data and experimental results, CNOOC researchers identified numerous microscopic "concealed" lithological traps within hydrocarbon migration pathways, successfully demonstrating the hydrocarbon storage potential of the slope belt in this uplift. Building on this breakthrough, the researchers combined fundamental studies in sedimentology and geochemistry to pinpoint hydrocarbon enrichment zones, define precise targets, and proceed with drilling. This approach ultimately led to the major discovery of a billion-ton lithologic oilfield in the slope belt of the Shijiutuo Uplift, despite its challenging structural characteristics of being low, marginal, and dipping.
A relevant official from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) stated that CNOOC has strengthened research on hydrocarbon migration and accumulation patterns in Neogene shallow slope zones and achieved significant discoveries through technological innovation. This breakthrough has challenged the traditional understanding that hydrocarbons in slope zones tend to migrate through without accumulating, making large-scale enrichment difficult. It also demonstrates the substantial exploration potential of the peripheral slope areas of uplifts under intense extensional-strike-slip fault activity.
The Qinhuangdao 29-6 oilfield is the second billion-ton lithologic oilfield discovered in the mature exploration area of the Shijiutuo Uplift. This further demonstrates the value of refined exploration and strengthens the resource foundation for increasing domestic reserves and production.
The extraction of oil and natural gas cannot be achieved without separation equipment.
Shanghai SAGA Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd., established in Shanghai in 2016, is a modern technology enterprise integrating R&D, design, production, and service. We are dedicated to developing separation and filtration equipment for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Our high-efficiency product portfolio includes de-oiling/dewatering hydrocyclones, desanders for micron-sized particles, and compact flotation units. We provide complete skid-mounted solutions and also offer third-party equipment retrofitting and after-sales services. Holding multiple proprietary patents and operating under a DNV-GL certified ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-45001 management system, we deliver optimized process solutions, precise product design, strict adherence to engineering specifications, and ongoing operational support.
Our high-efficiency cyclone desanders, renowned for their exceptional 98% separation rate, have earned recognition from international energy leaders. Constructed with advanced wear-resistant ceramics, these units achieve 98% removal of particles as fine as 0.5 microns in gas streams. This capability enables the reinjection of produced gas for miscible flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a key solution for enhancing oil recovery in challenging formations. Alternatively, they can treat produced water, removing 98% of particles larger than 2 microns for direct reinjection, thereby boosting water-flood efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
Our new product——The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander is a liquid-solid separation device that utilizes an efficient centrifugal principle to separate suspended impurities—such as solids in produced water, seawater, condensate, fine particles in high-viscosity liquids, and catalyst powder in reactors—from fluids (liquids, gases, or gas-liquid mixtures). It effectively removes solid particles with sizes down to 2 microns (at 98% efficiency) or smaller. The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander delivers high sand removal efficiency, capable of removing solid particles down to 2 microns. The equipment features a compact footprint, requires no external power or chemical additives, and has a service life of approximately 20 years. It offers online sand discharge capability without the need for production shutdown. Proven in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas, and others across Southeast Asia, SAGA desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They provide reliable solids removal from gas, well fluids, and condensate, and are critical for seawater purification, production stream protection, and water injection/flooding programs.
