Gazprom launches full-scale development of the Chonsk field in Eastern Siberia, with an annual capacity of 2 million tons

Gazprom has announced that the Chonsk oil field cluster in Eastern Siberia has entered the stage of commercial oil production. The production complex put into operation at the field cluster integrates 150 infrastructure projects, including core facilities such as crude oil treatment units, oil pipelines, metering stations, and two captive power plants. Once fully operational, the system will be able to supply approximately 2 million tons of crude oil per year to the Eastern Siberia–Pacific Ocean (ESPO) pipeline.

Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Management Committee of Gazprom, said: “With the launch of the Chonsk project, we are strengthening our position in the markets of the Asia-Pacific region. Overall, we are making a significant contribution to enhancing Russia’s energy security and sovereignty.” The development of the field cluster is carried out by Gazprom Neft. Previously, oil production at Chonsk was considered economically unfeasible because the hydrocarbon reservoirs are buried in geologically complex formations. Alexander Dyukov, Chairman of the Management Committee of Gazprom Neft, noted that the challenge was overcome through the use of digital modeling tools, modern extraction technologies, and synergies with the infrastructure of Transneft and Surgutneftegas.
The project team used digital geological and fluid dynamics models to select efficient development methods, including high-tech horizontal wells and multistage hydraulic fracturing. For the first time in onshore drilling in Russia, robotic drilling rigs were introduced, increasing operational efficiency by about one third. All process equipment was built using a modular design with a high degree of prefabrication. These solutions helped complete the oil infrastructure construction in two years, beating the industry standard.
Vladimir Krupenikov, General Director of Gazpromneft Arktika, explained: “With mobile technology, we were able to initiate early production and find effective solutions to unlock reserves. Modern construction, drilling and geological methods, along with our extensive experience in developing ‘difficult’ reservoirs in Eastern Siberia, have helped us launch full scale oil production.” The Chonsk field cluster is located on the border of the Irkutsk Region and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Local authorities believe this large scale project will drive regional economic growth. Aisen Nikolayev, Head of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), commented: “The start of commercial oil production at the Chonsk field cluster is a significant event for the energy sector of Eastern Russia. I am confident that Gazprom will achieve new successes in the future, and we, for our part, will continue to provide full support for the implementation of oil and gas projects by this strategic partner on our territory.”
Natural Gas Desanding
The extraction of oil and natural gas cannot be achieved without separation equipment.
Shanghai SAGA Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd., established in Shanghai in 2016, is a modern technology enterprise integrating R&D, design, production, and service. We are dedicated to developing separation and filtration equipment for the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. Our high-efficiency product portfolio includes de-oiling/dewatering hydrocyclones, desanders for micron-sized particles, and compact flotation units. We provide complete skid-mounted solutions and also offer third-party equipment retrofitting and after-sales services. Holding multiple proprietary patents and operating under a DNV-GL certified ISO-9001, ISO-14001, and ISO-45001 management system, we deliver optimized process solutions, precise product design, strict adherence to engineering specifications, and ongoing operational support.
Pre-compressor Natural Gas Desanding
Our high-efficiency cyclone desanders, renowned for their exceptional 98% separation rate, have earned recognition from international energy leaders. Constructed with advanced wear-resistant ceramics, these units achieve 98% removal of particles as fine as 0.5 microns in gas streams. This capability enables the reinjection of produced gas for miscible flooding in low-permeability reservoirs, a key solution for enhancing oil recovery in challenging formations. Alternatively, they can treat produced water, removing 98% of particles larger than 2 microns for direct reinjection, thereby boosting water-flood efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.
High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander
Our new product—The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desander is a liquid-solid separation device that utilizes an efficient centrifugal principle to separate suspended impurities—such as solids in produced water, seawater, condensate, fine particles in high-viscosity liquids, and catalyst powder in reactors—from fluids (liquids, gases, or gas-liquid mixtures). It effectively removes solid particles with sizes down to 2 microns (at 98% efficiency) or smaller.
The High Efficiency Ultra-Fine Particle Desanderdelivers high sand removal efficiency, capable of removing solid particles down to 2 microns. The equipment features a compact footprint, requires no external power or chemical additives, and has a service life of approximately 20 years. It offers online sand discharge capability without the need for production shutdown.
Proven in major global fields operated by CNOOC, CNPC, Petronas, and others across Southeast Asia, SAGA desanders are deployed on wellhead and production platforms. They provide reliable solids removal from gas, well fluids, and condensate, and are critical for seawater purification, production stream protection, and water injection/flooding programs.
Beyond desanders, SAGA offers a portfolio of acclaimed separation technologies. Our product line includes membrane systems for natural gas CO₂ removal, deoiling hydrocyclones, high-performance compact flotation units (CFUs), shale gas desanding, Cyclonic dewatering package with produced water treatment, and multi-chamber hydrocyclones, delivering comprehensive solutions for the industry's toughest challenges.
