On April 16, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced the efficient completion of drilling operations at an ultra-deepwater exploration well in the South China Sea, achieving a record-breaking drilling cycle of just 11.5 days—the fastest for China’s ultra-deepwater drilling at depths of 3,500 to 4,000 meters. This milestone validates the advanced capabilities of China’s independent deepwater drilling and completion technology system, showcasing its technical expertise in ultra-deepwater operations. The breakthrough holds significant importance for scaling up deepwater oil and gas resource development, supporting China’s goal of maintaining crude oil production at 200 million tons, and accelerating deep-sea energy exploration.
